Harmony Korine discusses his DVD collection

The idiosyncratic director of bad-taste mash-up ‘Trash Humpers’ gives us a tour of his mostly pornographic DVD collection.

How many DVDs have you got?
‘I have four DVDs and two VHS tapes and one LaserDisc.’

Any favourites?
‘Pam and Tommy Lee’s sex tape: the remastered director’s cut version.’

What’s the most embarrassing DVD in your collection?
‘ “King Schlong: Pt 2”.’

Have any DVDs influenced your work?
‘I have a tape of a guy who was born with no nose reading the Nashville phone book from 1986. When he gets to the end, he closes the book and collapses onto the floor and begins to convulse like a fish out of water. In his last and final breath he says the words “Ronald Reagan, we're not gonna take it”. It was directed by a guy I knew as a kid who was a professional stilt walker but who is now serving a life sentence in prison for a church arson.’

What’s the funniest DVD you’ve ever seen?
‘ “On Golden Pond”. I used to watch this on acid a lot and Jane Fonda’s ab muscles always took on a life of their own. They would speak to me in a coded way; they would scream out: “Suck it suck it suck it”.’

And the scariest?
‘Cheech and Chong films. I had a third-grade science teacher named Mr P Tang who had seven fingers on his left hand. He would always twirl a pencil with his seven fingers. He made us watch Cheech and Chong’s “Up in Smoke” and then got fired the next day. The whole experience was traumatic for me.’

Are there any rare, obscure or plain weird DVDs you’d recommend?
‘No, they all suck.’

What currently unavailable films or TV shows would you love to see on DVD?
‘ “World’s Greatest Douchebags and Car Chases”. It’s very popular in some parts of the world where illitercy [sic] is encouraged.’

What was the last DVD you cried to?
“ ‘Inspect Her Gadget” and “Riding Miss Daisy”.’

What sort of TV system do you have at home?
‘I have a broken stopwatch and a gold-plated record player that only plays 33rpm.’

Describe your perfect night in with a DVD.
‘I’d lay it down and just set that bitch on fire.’
