Atom seeks 'Adoration'
Atom Egoyan is to direct a film about man's relationship with technology in the 21st century
Having examined the relationship between man and technology in early works 'Family Viewing' and 'Speaking Parts', Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan is returning to the subject with new film 'Adoration', which will shoot in Toronto this September.
Set in the near-future, the script revolves around a high school student who claims to be a tragic figure from recent history while online, an act that contributes to the creation of a community of people mourning a catastrophe that never happened.
''Adoration' is basically about kids redefining themselves through the internet’ he told the LA Times. ‘This whole phenomenon of being one personality in school and being able to use technology to create a whole different identity.’
‘The 'Where the Truth Lies' helmer researched the project by rigging up interactive video screens at six Toronto high schools, allowing eight separate students to interact with each other without ever having to meet in person. Egoyan believe that such video-communication technology will be commonplace by the time the film hits screens next year.
‘When I started exploring technology in the ‘80s, I always thought that these instruments distanced us from each other, but now I realise actually it’s about putting us way closer to each other than we ever would have expected.'

- It is interesting that Egoyan is moving into the realm of younger people and their psyches. Posted on Jul 24 2007 15:16
