Brits get awards nod

It looks like the Brits are odds on to pick up some awards at this year‘s European Film Awards which will take place in Berlin on December 1. Ahead of the pack is Stephen Frears‘ award-magnet, ’The Queen‘, which has managed to bag six nominations, and ’The Last King of Scotland‘ was comes in close behind with five.

The nominees for best European Film 2007 are Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d’Or winner, ‘4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days’, Fatih Akin’s lacklustre ‘The Edge Of Heaven’; Kevin Macdonald’s 'The Last King Of Scotland', Olivier Dahan’s muddled Piaf biopic ‘La Vie En Rose’, Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud’s expressionist animation, ‘Persepolis’, and Frears’ ‘The Queen’.

While some of these films (especially ‘Last King…’) may be considered old hat by now, they have been allowed to enter because they came in too late for last year’s awards. Some producers are complaining that if the eligibility of films was moved back slightly, the EFAs may be considered more of a barometer for the BAFTAs and the Oscars.
