Find out about the best new films being released this autumn in London, including Joe Wright's 'The Soloist', Nick Hornby's film adaptation 'An Education' and Pixar's 'Up'

One of the first awards-botherers to emerge from the traps will be Joe Wright’s wildly imaginative ‘The Soloist ’ (September 25), featuring Robert Downey Jr and Jamie Foxx. But you’ll probably have to wait until ‘An Education’
(October 30) for the next film to have Bafta members reaching for their
voting forms: it’s a superb, 1960s-set British film, adapted by Nick
Hornby from Lynn Barber’s memoir.
Two very strong French films are released on the same day: 82-year-old Agnés Varda’s wonderful, eccentric self-portrait ‘The Beaches of Agnés’
(October 2) and Robert Guediguian’s illuminating resistance drama ‘Army
of Crime’ (October 2). But perhaps the best foreign-language film of
the season is Michael Haneke’s ‘The White Ribbon’ (November 13) which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
It’s a good season for imaginative animation, too: look out for Pixar’s wistful, charming ‘Up’ (October 9), Wes Anderson’s ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’ (October 23) and Disney’s ‘A Christmas Carol’ (November 6) starring Jim Carrey.
Fans
and rubberneckers alike will be curious about ‘Michael Jackson’s This
Is It’ (October 30), however the most curious musical film event of the
season has to be ‘Nine’
(November 25): Penélope Cruz, Daniel Day-Lewis and Judi Dench unite for
an all-singin’, all-dancin’ reworking of Fellini’s ‘81/2’.
