Speed date like a pro

Get the run-through on how to make a good first impression at Beijing's regular speed dating event from Allison Johnson

Be polite

It sounds obvious, but it’s amazing how many people just stop talking to their partner or walk out for a cigarette. You’re obviously not going to be fascinated by or attracted to everyone, but make an effort – and listen to people, as everyone has something interesting to say. If you’re with a friend, save your comments until the end so people don’t hear you talking about them.

Don’t ask the same questions again and again

It gets quite boring for everyone if you’re saying the same things over and over. And different questions are generally better than the standard ‘Where are you from?’ and ‘What do you do?’ kind of stuff. I like to ask people things like what’s their perfect holiday or favourite book, which gets you past a conversation that sounds like someone’s reading out their resume.

Stand out

It’s actually good to say shocking things. One girl told everyone she had rabies – she wasn’t the prettiest girl there, but it actually worked for her. Another girl told everyone she was a drug dealer, which got her lots of attention.

Have fun

The most important thing is to just have a laugh – speed dating’s meant to be fun. Sometimes we have pretty girls who are cold and uninterested, and the ones who have fun and a sense of humour get asked on more dates.

Avoid certain subjects

There are certain major no-nos, such as salaries and exes, but you should also put your best foot forward. There’s little point saying how pessimistic or lazy you are. And people definitely don’t want to hear about your grandma’s funeral or your friend’s bankruptcy.

Avoid excessive smoking and drinking

A lot of people complain about partners smoking during their conversations, so wait until breaks to go outside for a smoke. It’s also never a good idea to get drunk, and you should bear in mind that there are no bathroom breaks during speed dating. When you order a drink, ask your partner if he or she needs anything.

Dress nicely

Dress as if you are going on a date, not buying groceries around the corner. First impressions are important, so make sure you’re clean and look like you put some thought into your outfit.
