Cinema's craziest car chases – part two
With the release of petrol-head actioner 'Fast & Furious', Time Out look back over some of cinema's craziest car chases
Film: Aachi and Ssipak
Vehicles: Tooled-up juggernaut, horsehead rollerblade thingies.
Custom features: highly addictive narcotic lollipops on board.
The opening of this Korean fecal freak-out redefines the animated car chase, mangling drug addiction, blue dwarves and what the BBFC calls ‘strong, bloody violence’. Not a movie to fight shy of an unfeasible body count, the tone is set with this early tank-jacking by the diminutive highwaymen, as they turn a government transport into a charnel house on wheels.
Running Scared
Vehicles: Lincoln town car, bulletproof taxi, tube train.
Custom features: Train tracks, red-hot nuns, manic gesticulation, you name it!
When the script dictates that your new squad car is to be a bulletproof taxicab that happens to run on the same gauge as the Chicago El train system, you know it's going to be a lively day. An unmissable opportunity, then, for Gregory 'Hoofer’ Hines and Billy Crystal to mug their way through the most contrived car chase of all time.
Film: Roadgames
Vehicles: Refrigerated arctic meathauler, murderer’s bread van.
Custom features: World’s first stationary car chase.
Heroically named outback trucker and part-time poet Pat Quid (Stacy Keach) pursues his murderous nemesis down a dark and gradually narrowing alleyway, leading to a gear-grinding, wing-mirror-shattering, spark-scraping finale of nailbiting, motionless intensity.
Author: Adam Lee Davies, Paul Faircluffe, David Jenkins, Tom Huddleston
