Films in London: 2010 preview

Matthew Vaughn's 'Kick-Ass', Tim Burton's 'Alice in Wonderland' and Christopher Nolan's 'Inception' all feature in our preview of 2010's must-see movies...

Shutter Island (Dir Martin Scorsese)
Released: March
Martin Scorsese’s eagerly awaited, long-delayed adaptation of Dennis Lehane's novel stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a US marshal investigating a mysterious disappearance from a remote asylum for the criminally insane.

Kick Ass.jpg

Kick-Ass (Dir Matthew Vaughn)
Released: April
This latest from ex-Guy Ritchie affiliate Mathew Vaughn looks like a deliciously crude riff on ‘Watchmen’, as Brit up-and-comer Aaron Johnston plays a gawky teen who dons some green Spandex and chooses to fight crime without actually having any super powers.

Robin Hood.jpg

Robin Hood (Dir Ridley Scott)
Released: May
The trailer makes it look like a piece of Hollywood historical revisionism on a par with its Costner-starring forebear ‘Prince of Thieves’, but Ridley Scott re-teaming with his muscular muse Russell Crowe makes this one of 2010’s mega-budget must-sees.

Alice in Wonderland 3D (Dir Tim Burton)
Released:March
Tim Burton tackles the Lewis Carroll classic with the help of the latest 3D CG effects and Johnny Depp (of course!) daubed in white face paint and an orange curly wig as his Mad Hatter.

 Toy Story.jpg

Toy Story 3D (Dir Lee Unkrich)
Released: July
Woody, Buzz and the gang return for their third adventure, which sees them relegated to a kids' day care centre after their grown up owner Andy heads off to college.

Scott Pilgrim Vs The World (Dir Edgar Wright)

Released: August
Early talk on the Twittersphere seems to suggest that Edgar Wright’s latest – a graphic novel adaptation starring Michael Cera as the titular Scott Pilgrim who has to defeat the past lovers of his girlfriend-to-be – is set to be a witty and wild treat.

Mike Leigh.jpg

Untitled New Mike Leigh (Dir Mike Leigh)
Released: TBC
His first since ‘Happy-Go-Lucky’, Leigh reunites with Phil Davis, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton and others for a film partly shot in Derby. As ever, the story is a secret.

Cemetery Junction (Dirs Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant)
Released: April
If nothing else, ‘The Invention of Lying’ and ‘Ghost Town’ proved that Ricky Gervais could indeed hold his own in Hollywood, but this latest offering – co-written and directed with Stephen Merchant – sees him trying his hand at a homegrown Brit coming-of-age comedy.

Inception.jpg

Inception (Dir Christopher Nolan)
Released: August
Details are sketchy on the new film from ‘Dark Knight’ director Christopher Nolan – all we know is that it's a futuristic corporate thriller which sees Leonardo DiCaprio entering people's dreams in order to extract important information.

Wall Street 2 (Dir Oliver Stone)
Released: April
Gordon Gekko is back in Oliver Stone's riposte to the ongoing economic crisis. This time around, Michael Douglas's disgraced financier is teaming up with ruthless young trader Shia LeBouef to uncover a case of corporate malfeasance.

All of the films mentioned above bear little excitement in comparison to the new Herzog film which is out 'properly' this year. If 'My Son, My Son' is half as good as Time Out thinks then it will be the film of the year with little competition! Posted on Jan 08 2010 19:11
