'Inside Man' takes the top spot in London

Spike Lee's new thriller is the box office number one, while Eli Roth's 'Hostel' comes in at three.

Mar 28 2006

Spike Lee's sparkling return to form 'Inside Man' shot to number one at the London box office this weekend, scoring a mighty impressive £163,752 from 13 screens.

The tense thriller heads up a hat-trick of high new entries, with gender-bending drama 'Transamerica' coming straight in at number two, and TOMB favourite 'Hostel' checking in at number three.

The top two films received critical acclaim, so expect them to have good runs on the chart, while 'Hostel' was called 'disgusting, degrading' and 'dangerous' by the Daily Mail, so chances are it will do even better.

'The Pink Panther' drops from two to five, though the fact that it is still on the chart begs the question 'who is actually watching this shit?'

And aside from that the only other new entry is John Turturro's 'Romance and Cigarettes', which came straight in at number eight, a disappointing debut for a film that deserves better.

Next week 'Basic Instinct 2' will doubtless open big, although if there's any justice in the world, Tommy Lee Jones' marvellous 'Three Burials' will hit the top spot.
