Cannes competition line-up announced

Richard Kelly's 'Southland Tales' and Andrea Arnold's 'Red Road' are two suprise Cannes inclusions.

Richard Kelly's eagerly anticipated follow-up to 'Donnie Darko', 'Southland Tales', will appear in competition at Cannes this year, where it will compete against Alejandro González Iñárritu's 'Babel' and Pedro Almodovar's 'Volver'.

The Cannes line-up was announced today, and it's good news for British cinema as Andrea Arnold, who won an Oscar for her 2003 short 'Wasp', has also made the cut with her first full-length film, 'Red Road'.

Other films appearing in competition include Sofia Coppola's 'Marie Antoinette', Ken Loach's 'The Wind That Shakes the Barley' and Richard Linklater's 'Fast Food Nation'.

Foreign-language pics are also well represented, with Aki Kaurismaki's 'Lights in the Dusk', Nanni Moretti's 'The Caiman', Pedro Costa's 'Juventude em Marcha' and Guillermo Del Toro's 'Pan's Labyrinth' all competing.

Indeed, the only major omission from the competition appears to be Woody Allen's 'Scoop', which many thought would feature following the rapturous reception that greeted 'Match Point' last year.

Meanwhile, the out of competition special screenings are 'United 93', 'X-Men: The Last Stand' and 'Over the Hedge'.

'The Da Vinci Code' opens the festival on May 17, and Time Out will of course be on hand to bring you daily reports from the Croisette.
