Will Smith is a 'Legend'

The former Fresh Prince is set to star in Francis Lawrence's take on 'I Am Legend'.

Apr 26 2006

More than a year ago, we reported that 'Constantine' director Francis Lawrence was planning a film version of Richard Matheson's sci-fi classic 'I Am Legend' (click here for that story).

Well now it seems that the adaptation may come to fruition, with Will Smith reportedly close to signing on the dotted line to star.

Smith was originally slated to appear in Michael Bay's version of the story in 2002, but a spiralling budget saw that effort shelved.

Warner Bros. are keen to resurrect the project however, and are currently clearing the way for a start date in early 2007.

If Smith does agree to star, 'I Am Legend' will doubtless be one of the most spectacular movies of the year, revolving as it does around the last man on earth battling a race of blood-thirsty mutant vampires.

Akiva Goldsman has written the script, and shooting will take place on location in New York.
