'American Dreamz' hits box office top spot
The Hugh Grant comedy is a new entry at number one in London, while 'Silent Hill' makes a disappointing debut.
Apr 26 2006
It was a disappointing weekend at the London box office, with 'American Dreamz' hitting the top spot with a lowly gross of just £76,244 from 14 screens.
The Paul Weitz comedy, which stars Hugh Grant, Mandy Moore and Dennis Quaid, managed to knock 'Ice Age 2: The Meltdown' from the top spot, but only just as the animated characters took £67,650 from 12 screens in its third week on release.
Videogame adaptation 'Silent Hill' also underperformed at number five, though that may be down to the fact that the film was screened late for critics so there were hardly any reviews in print on Friday. To see what our man thought, head here.
Further down the chart there's little else in the way of action, though it's disappointing to see Time Out favourites 'C.R.A.Z.Y.' and 'Junebug' scraping into the chart at nine and ten respectively.
Next week, 'Lemming' and '16 Blocks' should both have strong openings, though we predict that horror comedy 'Slither' will surprise everyone by sliming its way to the top.
