'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' wins Palme d'Or
Ken Loach is victorious in Cannes, while Brit director Andrea Arnold's 'Red Road' also claims a prize.
May 30 2006
In a surprise move, the jury at the 59th Cannes Film Festival gave this year's Palme d'Or to Ken Loach's 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley'.
The Irish drama had been well-received at the festival, but this year's hot favourites were thought to be Alejandro González Iñárritu's 'Babel' and Pedro Almodóvar's 'Volver'.
Neither film walked away empty handed however, with Inarritu winning the directing award and Almodóvar the screenwriting prize.
The cast of 'Volver' also collectively won the best actress award, while the male ensemble from Rachid Bouchareb's 'Days of Glory' won the actor award.
It was also a special night for British director Andrea Arnold, who was awarded the Jury Prize for her critically acclaimed first feature, 'Red Road'.
