X-Men vs England

The mutants are no match for some good weather and the World Cup at the London box office.

Jun 13 2006

The combination of some scorching sun and a certain football tournament kicking off meant that it wasn't exactly a record-breaking weekend in London cinemas.

In fact, the figures were the worst we've seen in a long time, with 'X-Men: The Last Stand' taking a paltry £64,230 from 18 screens.

That was enough to seal the film's third week at number one however, with 'The Da Vinci Code' once again holding onto the number two spot.

'The Omen' was the highest new entry, coming in at a disappointing three following a whole heap of hype, but that may be down to most people going to see it on the heavily marketed opening day 06/06/06.

Further down the chart, the excellent 'Secuestro Express' and the frankly rubbish 'RV' came straight in at seven and nine respectively, while '36' made a surprising new entry at number ten after a week on release.

Next week, the top two will doubtless continue to dominate, though if the weather holds out and the England team pull their socks up, don't rule out cinemas being empty and this column being, for want of a better word, moribund.
