'Superman Returns' reviews

We've got three early opinions of the biggest film of the summer.

Jun 19 2006

The 'Superman Returns' reviews have started to roll in, and thus far the feedback has been extremely positive.

Screen Daily's Mike Goodridge was impressed by the film's 'emotional intensity' claiming it to be 'made with the intelligence and elegance that [Bryan] Singer brought to his 'X-Men' films and filled with visual and thematic invention,' and calling it 'a thoroughly engaging summer spectacle.'

Variety's Todd McCarthy says: 'Despite its acute awareness of what's come before, 'Superman Returns' is never self-consciously hip, ironic, post-modern or camp. To the contrary, it's quite sincere, with an artistic elegance and a genuine emotional investment in the material that creates renewed engagement in these long-familiar characters and a well-earned payoff after 2½ hours spent with them.'

And in typically understated fashion, capital letters and all, Ain't It Cool's Harry Knowles said: 'Today I saw a SUPERMAN film that is no fantasy – no careless product of wild imagination. No, my friends… this is the film I was hoping and dreaming for. A movie to reintroduce SUPERMAN to the world.'

As for the Time Out view, you'll just have to wait until we've seen the darn thing, but rest assured it will be up here as and when…

Can you say 280+ million dollars? That's how much it took to make this crap! What a travesty to the original flick!!! Huge let down. The only positive thing about the movie were special effects . . . that's it. Even then, the Big Gun fired at Supe & the bullet to the eye? How original is that . . . we know all that already. Come with something fresh. I left the movie w/o one memorable moment to quote or feel good about. Supe & his kid does not go well and no chemistry at all with characters - no character development - nothing - Clark Kent must have said only 3 words. And hello - Clark Kent gone 5 yrs & Superman gone 5 yrs - Kent shows up - Supe shows up. How obvious is that? Hug let down. Save your $$$$ Posted on Jul 19 2006 03:00

I wish i could be more positive about not so super new movie, i think the writer's could have used an old superman comic story and made a better story ,although i like seeing Noil Neal and Jack Larson from the George Reeves TV show and nicer costume they finally got away from the holloween big S costume even if they did leave off the S on his cape,it's a good costume. It might have better if there had been more acting in the superman and Clark role, not that the role wasn't played good just lame sript. On a good note, over all with good special effect and good role playing and good acters just not enough of it. Posted on Jul 15 2006 04:27

Several things on my list to say...I can never remember them all after reading all your comments:
Firstly, I want to give kudos to Superman Returns. Although it wasn't outstanding, it was pretty damn good. I'm not just a Superman fan either...I'm full fledged geek when it comes to superheros and film...put the two together and I'm uber-dork. So, me being pleased with SR is a big leap in the right direction, and I'm happy with the overall movie. I think it stands against the originals with pride.
I thought it was brilliant to use the original graphics, style, music, and Brando. Pure genius. We all know the reasons they were used...let's get over that. Were they effective? You bet.
Brandon Routh--what can I say, this was an absolute perfect choice for The Man of Steel and Kent. I totally agree with your comment on him Mr. Wells--he's a good actor, but more importantly, he's a beautiful man. He looks absolutely perfect. We all loved Reeve's Superman of course, and of course, they wanted to find a no-name that looked like Reeve's. Not only does he look perfect, but also his mannerisms are fine-tuned to match the original performance by Reeve.
Bosworth? Margot is a much better choice. I think they opted for beauty as opposed to quirky (which I think Margot was). Bosworth is a good actor, don't get me wrong. But she just isn't...Lois.
Spacey? Something deep inside makes me like Hackman's Lex over Spacey's. I don't know why. I think they are both fantastic actors (Spacey may be even a tad better), but Hackman seems even more likely to fit the Lex character through and through.
Good movie. Nuff Said on that. Now onto other things:
    Donald Batilan and others"
Can you be serious? You want your money back? You would fire the director?
Donald...do you realize how incredibly ignorant you are? You "think" you're being clever or witty...but what you are is pure negative stupidity. You're a bovine reactionary...I'm very sorry for being this harsh, I just can't stand when other human beings make me feel bad about being a human being. Evolve people!
    Thanks.

Ok, this movie is good it introduces the superman characters and has some level of action i didnt like the kid thing although it does follow some of the latter comics. he did a great job playing superman, i think the next two movies will concentrate on the growing relationship between superman and lex and i hope they find someone else to play lois. good film needs time to grow on people and i think that will only happen with the dvd release that will give us more krypton footage that was cut and with the release of two more movies i think we will have a great trilogy of new sp movies. The new Superman was very dissapointing. I thought this was supposed to be one of the most expensive movies ever made? Either someone is cyphoning money or the price of good editing is inflating. I did not see the 200$ mil. How is it that Superman is immediately weak when in contact with Kryptonite, but he seems to carry a whole planet of it at the end of the movie? All we saw in Superman Returns was him repeately lowering heavy things and falling through the air. They should have cut this movie by 30 minutes. Parker Posey and Kevin Spacy are great actors but i did not approve of Superman Returns. Posted on Jul 04 2006 03:28

I am so disappointed in the New Superman. I agree with all the people who had a huge problem with this film. I am a big Superman Fan and I love Christopher Reeve. The movie lacked more than good moral behaviors from a Super Hero but Lex is a no body. I've seen this old bla story line before. Give me something new and fresh. The gaps in the movies could totally confuse any audience even ones who follows Superman. I would fire the director. I almost asked for my money back because I was so disappointed. Superman was totally irresponsible in the movie especially at the end for seeing his son in his room. That is tresspassing! I don't care if you are Super Man You can't be sneaking into people's houses for no reason. I am so angry how bad the movie is! I do want my money back!
    Sincerely,

People are WAY too anal about this movie. This Superman movie was AWESOME! The plot, the action, the special effects. I mean if people want to see nothing but action with no story then they obviously lack the brain power to understand a great movie with depth to it. Superman was gone b/c he had to see for himself if the astrologists truly found Krypton. Yeah it was blown up, but think about it. Kal-El was told this, and didn't know for a fact b/c he was sent off before he even knew what was going on. I would want to know for myself as well. Brandon did a GREAT job playing this role. I did see a little bit of Christopher Reeve in his gestures and speech at times. I myself almost got choked up when he was getting jumped. Kevin Spacey brought a NEW meaning to an evil Lex here. Superman's kid...Honestly I loved that idea. Sure alot of people are used to the same old boring story. But keep an open mind to some originality. The direction they went with this film was great for change. It adds more depth, story, content to it. The kid just needs a haircut BADLY. All in all, I give this film a 9.5 out of 10. Those who didnt grow up watching the Christopher Reeve Superman movies seem not to like this one as much. B/c of that I believe they will never truly understand. Posted on Jul 01 2006 13:23

The film was good up to the point when the piano get's thrown. If any body didn't see the horrible twist coming , he is clueless.I find that the simple fact of seeing superman fly will keep this movie from doing bad financially, but it does not do superman justice. The major problem is the child. This might not seem as something so bad , but this child kills the supeman character. It demystifies superman. I'm not going to say I didn't enjoy parts of the film, becacuse that would be a lie. In addition ,Aside from the child, the film seemed not to have a climax and rather it builds very little to the "grand" scheme with the kryptonite , sure you feel for him when he is getting beat up , but it did nothing for me. The Lex/Super relationship had no chemistry and even though Spacey did a good job the script did not allow for a rivalry to standout, or even make superman seem vulnerable and lex dangerous. Adding on the kryptonite scene when lex explains he has "alien technology" to defend himself from invading nation does not come through in any manner. How was he planning to control a new continent with just five thugs?another issue was that clark was left in the shadows, sure it's not called clark kent returns , but give me a break it's his alternate identity and the writers seemed to forget him entirly , besides him seeing llamas what else, character wise, gets developed? the following is a more technical comic wise nitpicking. It appeared that the kryptonite did not affect superman in ways past films and even comics did ,in my part, this shows poor continuity and no concern for the character of superman. in conclusion I don't consider Superman a complete failure ,but rather a devastating disappointment. The people that are complaining about Superman leaving for five years when he had a child apparently didn't get the movie. He left way before the child was born. He had no idea that Lois was pregnant. He can't stick around now because Richard thinks he's the father and Lois still loves him in the end. Them movie essentially ended the way Spiderman 2 should have. Even though we all want the Superhero to end up with the girl it just can't happen. He has a responsibility to the greater good and it wouldn't be fair to get Lois and the son she didn't even bother to tell him about until he was in a coma, mixed up in all the mess. WOW! Awesome movie! Come on guys, superman is finally back and on the big screen. I felt moved when he lost his powers, and then flew up to the sun and regained his powers. That gave me goose bumps. That movie was so much fun to watch, i felt like kid again. I even go as far as saying i even felt inspired. I loved it. Good work. Posted on Jun 30 2006 07:16

You guys are way too hard on this movie. I loved the movie, I didn't care for Kate but I thought that Spacey played an excellent Luthor. Lex was played vey well. Jimmy was a little too much but I liked Perry (Not as much as the old one) but you can't compare to a movie written 30 years ago. The 1st is almost always going to be better. I thought that while there were story gaps it was still big gaps. In the next films I see more action and hopefully not too much concentration on the kid. Brandon reminded me of Reeves a little when he played as Clark. Hearing the old Superman theme and hearing Brando's voice as Jorel was great. I think you guys are nuts, I really enjoyed it and thought that for the first Superman movie in 30 years it was pretty damn good. Posted on Jun 30 2006 03:40

I loved this film. Yes, the gaps in the storyline were a bit hard to swallow, but come on moviegoers, suspend your disbelief for 2.5 hours of cinematic fun. Seriously. If your imagination loves that a man can fly, then let your imagination get over the whole "well where the heck was he" thing. That's how I think. I loved the love child. And Superman isn't to blame for that one. Lois is the hoe here! And poor Richard- she led him to believe he's a dad when he's not? Bad girl, Lois. Ah well, she's always been a bit selfish and that's why we love her. Posted on Jun 29 2006 21:52

I was disappointed. I thought the chemistry between Lois, Clark and Jimmy was horrible. As far as I am concerned, Lois Lane wasn't in that movie. Kate Bosworth was atrocious. The story itself was choppy and all over the place leaving way too many gaps. Posted on Jun 29 2006 21:17

I thought the film was a little too long and concentrated more on Lex Luther than Superman's return. Not much was asked about Clark's absence except, how was your trip? I believe Bryan Singer is setting up a dynasty with the "child of Superman". After all, Smallville on the WB has done well telling the story of a young Clark Kent. Once Brandon Routh outgrows the role, Singer can easily continue the francise with a "Superboy" story line. Posted on Jun 29 2006 14:57
