London chart says 'Thank You For Smoking'

Comedy satire 'Smoking' is a new entry at number one, while 'Hard Candy' also makes its mark on the top ten.

Jun 21 2006

'Thank You For Smoking' was a new entry at number one at the London box office over the weekend, meaning that it really was 'The Last Stand' for the 'X-Men' at the top.

It was a fantastic opening weekend for the wildly overrated (in my opinion anyway) 'Smoking', but that's probably as much down to the film playing at a whopping 24 screens and it being the first semi-serious flick to hit screens for a while as it is to do with the quality of the film.

The next highest new entry was 'The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift', which inexplicably came in at number three. We've got no idea who's going to see it, but please, can you stop?

The hugely controversial 'Hard Candy' was the only other new entry, debuting on the chart at number five, where it is surrounded by a whole host of summer blockbusters like 'Poseidon', 'The Omen' and 'The Da Vinci Code' all jockeying for position.

Finally, '36' continues its slow but steady rise up the chart, climbing from ten to eight after three weeks on release. At this rate, come August, this fine French thriller will have finally made it to the top spot.

Next week, expect soppy tearjerker 'The Lake House' to do brisk business, while 'The Wind That Shakes the Barley' should also be a high new entry.
