Film4 for free!

The newly branded channel won't cost you a penny from July 23.

Jul  3 2006

Channel 4 has announced plans to launch the brilliant FilmFour channel as a free service from July 23.

Newly branded as Film4, the channel will be available on all major UK digital platforms and screen a mixture of old films, cult classics and the best in new flicks from 6pm to 6am every day.

The major change to scheduling will be the fact that adverts will screen during films, but aside from that, C4 director of TV Kevin Lygo said that little will change:

'Film4 will continue to act as an editor of choice for its viewers, selecting its schedules on the basis of quality as well as box office appeal and helping the audience get under the skin of the film industry.'

He continued 'Increasing Film4's distribution and making it freely available will help maintain and protect Channel 4's stake in British film for the next 25 years.'

Having been a fee-paying subscriber since the channel first launched, I can honestly say that the quality in programming has made it worth every penny, so this announcement is good news for all fans of great cinema in the UK!

UPDATE: In response to several questions below, head here to find out how to receive Film4.

    Dear Team of Film 4
I think that your films are the best and the choice that you are selecting every week are great. But, I have to complain about the times that you are playing the same films, and above all because it happens during the weekends: the Friday and Saturday I can watch exatly the same films at 9.00 p.m. that I have watched during the week.
What about the korean and Japanese films? I think that you should just in case that you want to repeat some films to do with those films that during the week they are played so late that we cannot watch -maybe because We have to get up early the following day.
I have to say I did not know anything about korean and japanese films and I think that they are great and weird, and they make them make
    strange and with suspense.
Please try not to repeat the films at 9.00 pm again and above all during the weekend. Posted on Oct 22 2006 16:03

    Hi mike,
I had the same problem - but if you delete all current services and then attempt to rescan for all services it returned on channel 29 - I recommended this earlier in the thread and it seems to have worked for others as well. - Worth a try... Posted on Oct 18 2006 16:26

Hey folks - we used to get film 4 no worries on freeview then in past month we get no signal message. I'm KY11 postcode - I solved the problem by deleting all existing services from the freeview box and rescanning. As if by magic Film 4 is back although it is on Channell 29 - hope this helps. Some of you Edinburgh punters probably pick up from the same transmitter as me in Fife. Posted on Oct 08 2006 19:31

I have a set-top Freeview box through which I would be delighted to acccess Film4 on channel 31. Although having rescanned the available UHF channels, both automatically and manually, in accordance with the manufacturer's handbook, said channel is reported as having no signal. The automatic scan did add some obscure radio stations , but not the desired channel 31. Is Edinburgh in a channel 31 blind-spot? Posted on Jul 29 2006 18:07

NTL in Ireland have just informed me that Film4 is not free on my package. This does not make any sense to me as I am a digital customer, I just didnt pay the extra to get sky movies, sky sports, film 4 etc. They tell me film 4 charges them and they have to pass the cost on to the customer. This seems like rubbish to me. Anyone any ideas? Posted on Jul 26 2006 14:31

Hi Film Four is channel 31 on freeview. You will need to rescan the channels to pick it up as it was encrypted before, refer to your manual on how to do this. Really it should be done regulary as many new channles dont get publicised. Hope this helps Posted on Jul 25 2006 22:53
