Frank Miller gives form to 'The Spirit'

The 'Sin City' man is set to adapt another comic book for the big screen.

Jul 20 2006

Two years after Los Angeles based Odd Lot Entertainment brought the rights to comic book character 'The Spirit', they've finally found a director in the shape of Frank Miller, author and co-director of 'Sin City'.

Variety reports that producer Michael Uslan shopped 'The Spirit' to various studios with no luck. 'They would say, "This is great, but we have to get him out of a suit and tie and into spandex."' No wonder Miller only agreed to do it with the proviso 'I can't let anybody else touch it.'

Given Miller's ability to create sets with a gritty, comic book feel, an almost worrying penchant for graphic violence and his assurances that 'I intend to be extremely faithful to the heart and soul of the material', there's little worry that Will Eisner's 1940s hero will end up in red tights.

As for story, 'The Spirit' focuses on a detective who is buried alive in Wild Wood cemetery. Believed to be dead, he returns to Central City, dons a mask and fights crime in a shroud of secrecy

What set 'The Spirit' apart from the competition however, was its use of movie style angles, colour and light to create a sense of tension and foreboding. Ground-breaking, moody and menacing, it should be right up Frank Miller's street!

'The Spirit' is set to shoot next spring.
