Broomfield tackles Iraq

Nick Broomfield will film a dramatic reconstruction of the massacre of 24 Iraqis for his next film.

Sep 25 2006

Nick Broomfield is to tell the story of the 24 Iraqi civilians killed in Haditha by US marines last year with his next movie.

Broomfield, who is currently at the San Sebastian film festival promoting his new film 'Ghosts', will shoot the as-yet-untitled pic in Jordan in September.

'We met some of the survivors of the massacre who had a lot of material that they filmed, which gave us a very detailed idea of what happened' he told the Hollywood Reporter. 'We talked to members of the insurgency because I felt the insurgency is almost like a concrete wall. It's almost like, who are these insurgents?'

The massacre allegedly took place in response to the killing of an American soldier by a roadside bomb, and Broomfield says he has also contacted some of the Marines involved to cover both sides of the story.

'These are 18-year-old kids, a lot of whom are gang members, never even finished high school, went straight into the Marines, went through Fallujah and just got into that killing zone' he explained. 'They're not bad guys; they're just doing what they're trained to do.'

The TOMB is off to San Sebastian on Wednesday, so hopefully we'll have more news on this potentially explosive project soon.

this film is not to make the US look bad or the REAL Marines he has in the film would not take part in it! Have more faith in our Marines yourself. Do you have any knowledge as to what happened in Haditha? Broomfield is going to take all of the proper steps to make this film (as he has in his other films) true to the best of ability. How can you possibly make a movie about this incident when the outcome of the investigation is not yet known? Do you really expect to get the true story from the Iraqis? I guess you don't respect these Marines very much if you think that they were gang members before they joined the Marines. Give our guys a break! Posted on Sep 26 2006 00:40
