San Sebastian shenanigans

A luggage-less Chris Tilly makes it back from the Spanish film festival in one piece.

Oct  2 2006

Apologies for the lack of online action over the last few days but The TOMB was attending the San Sebastian Film Festival, watching more movies, eating more tapas and drinking more sangria than is probably good for us.

It was my first time at the festival, and I'm pleased to report that the standard of cinema was excellent. Standouts included the hugely entertaining Bosnian/Croatian/Macedonian/Slovenian/Serbian, Hungarian/Austrian/French/British co-production 'Border Post', and Bahman Ghobadi's haunting 'Half Moon', which shared the best film award with French flick 'Mon Fils a Moi'.

The Volkswagen Youth Award deservedly went to Peter Schonau Fog for his bittersweet ode to childhood, 'The Art of Crying', while Tom DeCillo won best director and best screenplay for 'Delirious'. And if we had had anything to do with the decisions, we'd have given the Mexican cast and crew of 'Fuero de Cielo' the Time Out Tequila award for partying harder than anyone else at the fest.

There was also the odd personal disaster (luggage lost; a room that smelled of mothballs), and the usual festival insanity (I really wasn't expecting to hear either the phrase 'he didn't really touch me for real down there, we were just acting', or, indeed, 'I used to play for Aston Villa') but overall it was a fantastic few days which I'll have a full report on later in the week.
