'Devil' defeats 'Departed' at box office

'The Devil Wears Prada' steals the top spot from under the nose of Scorsese's gangster flick.

Oct 10 2006

It was 'guys versus girls' at London cinemas over the weekend, and in a shock result, Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep wiped the floor with the combined might of Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen and Ray Winstone.

Soft fashion satire 'The Devil Wears Prada' wiped the floor with tough gangster flick 'The Departed', taking £335,883 to easily bag the top spot at the box office.

That meant Martin Scorsese's star-studded remake of 'Infernal Affairs' had to settle for second place, but it was still the biggest global opening weekend of the director's career, so we doubt the fast-talking New Yorker is too down in the dumps.

Unfortunately, Marty's success meant that the brilliant double whammy of 'The Queen' and 'Children of Men' dropped to three and four respectively, but thanks to critical acclaim, good word-of-mouth and the award season being just round the corner, both films should hang around the top ten for a while yet.

And just to make this column a lot duller, there were no other new entries on the chart, though it's good to see 'Volver' still going strong after seven weeks on release.

Next week, expect 'The History Boys' to give Meryl and Jack a run for their money at the top.
