LFF - 'Breaking and Entering' premiere and party

Chris Tilly attends the gala screening of the latest from Anthony Minghella and Jude Law.

Oct 30 2006

The TOMB attended the 'Breaking and Entering' Blackberry gala screening and after party on Friday, both of which were rather lacklustre affairs.

The film is far from one of Anthony Minghella's best. A comedy drama about the fallout caused by a series of thefts at an architecture firm in King's Cross, it engages the mind but unfortunately fails to engage the heart.

Jude Law gives a fine performance as Will, the work-obsessed professional whose life slowly starts to unravel when the break-ins occur, but Robin Wright Penn fails to make much of an impression as his alienated Swedish wife Liv. Juliette Binoche fares little better as Bosnian refugee Miro, and underwritten role that somtimes descends into Eastern European caricature.

That said, the film is a mildly entertaining way to spend two hours, and it's nice to see Minghella shoot in areas of London rarely seen on film.

The after party was a dull, staid affair however, so having knocked back a couple of cocktails, we cabbed it over to the 'Sleeping Dogs Lie' party which much more fun, much like the film.

Oh, and we also caught the world premier of Mike Figgis's 'A Portrait of London' in Trafalgar Square, but unfortunately it was a case of 'nice idea, shame about the execution', so the less said about it, the better.
