Nerds cancel revenge

Film fans rejoice - the 'Revenge of the Nerds' remake has ceased production.

Nov 22 2006

Regular readers of this column will be aware of my dislike for the barrage of movie remakes that get released week after week. In the last three months alone I've had to sit through god awful remakes of 'Pulse', 'The Wicker Man' and 'The Grudge 2', and tonight I've got a screening of an updated version of Bob Clarke's brilliant 'Black Christmas'.

A depressing indication of the lack of original thought pulsing through Hollywood brains at the moment, these unimaginative retreads rarely have any redeeming features.

I was therefore over the moon to hear that the 'Revenge of the Nerds' remake has imploded two weeks into production. Apparently Atlanta's Emory University, where much of the film was due to be shot, pulled out because of the script's raunchy content.

Variety also claims that Fox Atomic were unhappy with the dailies they were seeing, and put a stop to the production to concentrate on bigger films. Fox Atomic president Peter Rice said 'Everybody worked very hard on 'Revenge of the Nerds' and we're all very disappointed that we can't move forward.'

Disappointed? This is great news. Cinemagoers won't have to sit through a horrible re-hash of a film that wasn't particularly funny in the first place, and Rice and his associates can start thinking of something new and original to work on…like that eagerly anticipated 'License to Drive' remake.

Cinemagoers don't HAVE to sit through anything. Critics do. It's an occupational hazard which you must have been well aware of before you started this line of work. Apart from that, I agree with you. Mind you, you don't mention Scorsese's brilliant remake of 'Internal Affairs' - which we all must sit through, of course. Posted on Nov 22 2006 14:27
