Danny Boyle climbs 'Ponte Tower'

The versatile director will take charge of a thriller set in South Africa.

Never a man to play it safe, Danny Boyle is to shift genres yet again for his latest film, 'Ponte Tower'. Having previously tackled whimsical comedy ('A Life Less Ordinary'), horror ('28 Days Later…') and even a kid's film ('Millions') his next project will be a political thriller shot on location in South Africa.

The title comes from the 54-story tower that was built in the heart of Johannesburg in 1975 – a powerful symbol of apartheid that eventually became overrun by violent gangs.

Michael Thomas (the 'Scandal' screenwriter, not the former Arsenal and Liverpool striker) is currently penning the script, which will be loosely based on Norman Ohler's book about a Sowetan girl who moves to the tower and falls for the charms of a dangerous drug dealer.

Before then Boyle's latest – a stab at sci-fi called 'Sunshine' – will hit UK screens on April 6.
