'Baywatch' coming to cinemas
The world's favourite TV show is being made into a summer blockbuster, but will Hasslehoff be involved?
Nov 10 2004
Yup, you heard it right, the global TV phenomenon that was 'Baywatch' is all set to hit the big screen.
Big breasts, big hair, small Speedos and lots of slo-mo will combine to make what will doubtless be a surefire, sun-drenched celluloid classic.
The show, which ran (in a variety of guises) from 1989 to 2001, played in over 140 countries and was translated into more than 40 languages.
It also caused young males the world over to take a keen and somewhat unhealthy interest in the exploits of a group of Californian lifeguards, especially when the sublime acting talents of Pamela Anderson, Yasmine Bleeth and Carmen Electra were added to the cast.
There's no word yet as to whether the buxom triumverate will feature in the movie, but if the god-like David Hasselhoff doesn't make an appearance, you can bet that 'Baywatchers' the world over will be up in arms.
The plot is also being kept under wraps, but rest assured much of the story will revolve around muscular men and large breasted women running up and down beaches. In slow motion.
The film is being fast tracked to hit cinema screens in the summer of 2006, and will be produced by 'Baywatch' creators Michael Berk, Doug Schwartz and Greg Bonann, while 'Cabin Fever' director Eli Roth says he is fulfilling a lifelong dream by taking on co-producer duties.
'I don't know how much influence I'll have creatively' Roth told Time Out, 'But my goal here is to secretly drag out the production so it never ends. I promised the producers I could make the film in 600 days, because it has to be absolutely perfect.'
Roth continues: 'I want 'Baywatch' to make Stanley Kubrick's schedule look like a Roger Corman shoot. If I have to spend seven years on the beach in Hawaii with supermodels to get this film right, I will do it. That's how committed I am to this project!'
And with Roth already talking about incorporating a musical Hasselhoff montage, we're willing to bet that 'Baywatch' will either be a harrowing 90 minutes of celluloid sin, or the movie event of the decade.
