Danny Boyle tackles 'Slum Dog Millionaire'
Exclusive: The 'Sunshine' helmer tells us all about his next project.
Apr 5 2007
I spoke to the always affable Danny Boyle yesterday for our 'Sunshine' podcast, and when the subject turned to his next film, it seems I had my facts wrong. Rather than making South African-set thriller 'Ponte Tower' (as previously reported), Boyle is about to start work on a very different sort of film, as he himself explained.
'It's called 'Slum Dog Millionaire', it's based on a true story, and it's about a kid from the slums of Mumbai, who has nothing – he's ill educated, he's illiterate – and he goes on the Hindi version of 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire' and wins it. And they can't believe that he's done it. They think he's cheated. They think he's getting signals from embedded chips in his body, or that there are people coughing in the audience, but he won it.
'What's clever about the film is that the structure shows you how he knows the answers. Certain things have happened to him in his life and they happen to ask questions about those things. But the real reason he's on the show is to get in touch with the girl he loves but has lost in the chaos of Mumbai, and all he knows is that she watches the show religiously. So he's not even there to win the money, but that's when you win I suppose, when you're not even trying.'
Simon Beaufoy ('The Full Monty') has written the script, with filming set to start on location in Mumbai soon. And as for 'Ponte Tower', that film is still very much on Boyle's horizon, with Michael Thomas currently working on the script.

Freida : All Humans are equal and has divine potential. So are you. So, your conclusion on Indians are so and so, is an impaired judgement rooted deeply in your predisposed thoughts.
If you are not at peace with yourself, how can you be at peace with the world.
Do not let your mind ( =ego) becomes an impairment to your true awareness.
If coming here in this forum, and name calling is a blissful experience to you, then we expect you will be able to sustain this behaviour of yours for days and months to come, to say the least. Posted on Mar 06 2009 05:38 - Report as inappropriate

- Frieda....are you Indian? Coz if you are.,....you should be ashamed of yourself. Who the hell do you think you are passing moral judgement on an entire country. Whether you liked a movie or not is your prerogative....but you have no business labelling anyone anything. You are truely a sicko. Posted on Mar 06 2009 05:25

To roser, I completely agree with u. 'TUMNE MERI MU KI BAAD CHHINLI'! :)
AARE, the director is not any social worker or politician leader of India. He had to make a movie with them,he made. It was not his work or responsibility, but inspite of that he gifted them a TV n a camera. Now,how can anyone say that he is exploiting our countries children? In fact,he brought some talented children of our country into the lime light n now its the responsibility of our Govt. to bring them out of the poverty. So people, please stop to blame the English with such odd reasons. Posted on Mar 05 2009 19:30 - Report as inappropriate

- Hi Panna. What's is this nonsense about eastern and western children? and what is this nonsense about the director becoming a millionaire. That' life for you my dear. I director decides to make a movie about a story, the story is about something tht happens in India and he looks for actors, makes the film, and oh... it sells a lot and wins an Oscar. nDo you know why? Because he's a great director and know how to use his talent. Have you seen the pay roles? How do you know he's exploting Indian chidren? Let me tell you something; every country straggles to take care of their more disadvantega population and India hasn't it very well yet. India has to solve it's social problem and to start with, they should stop to blamer the English for their misgivings after all the Brithish left 61 years ago. So, start working; there is a lot to be done. I've seen many rich pepople in India and ... you know what? I'm not English Posted on Mar 03 2009 22:14

First my appologies to all of you for my arrogance due to my ignorance !
When I first posted my comment, it was all based on the fact that I had to turn off the movie in the very beginning, as I felt terribly betrayed. I felt the need to defend my very own (India) and hence all my comments.
Today, I took a second attempt to watch the movie without any bias and I could see everything in a much bright light.
The struggle shown in the slum life is very real ( could add a few comments here or there, but that is not relevant now), and makes one a true survivor, much smarter than most others who only go through a format in their life.
This movie does not malign the image of Indians, as I previously argued based on watching the movie only for 10 mins. So, my appologies again.

- I have been reading about it in papers and cant wait to see it. what i read today and the pictures in the papers has realy touched my heart. I cant get over the little boys crying face and the reality that he and the little girl r back in the slum after all that good and hard work that they have put in. They have won the oscars but it hasnt changed their lives but shorely it made the producers and directors millions. I just hope that what the children were promised is justified. If they were western children they would have been in mansions by now and not just given a sony scibershot camera and sent back in the slum!. I just hope the midea keeps us up todate with the childrens progress in life, hopefuly out of poverty Posted on Feb 28 2009 23:37

- Everyone wants to see the positive side of their country. The reality is India is show vivdily and protrayed truthfully. Many Indians get upset and dont want to admit the facts and sweep it under the carpet. I have travel to many parts of the world and poverty is a reality in any third world or developing country ..lol..or in USA.Slun dog millionaire is truth a great show that depicts the negative but true aspect of life for many of the poor. - I’m getting surprise why people r raising such silly issues about SM.Poverty with several negative sides has been shown in this film,So what?Isn’t it the reality?Yes,there r other realities of India-several progresses. But a film maker can’t always choose only the positive side to make a film,’coz every real is not positive. If a movie is to produce about any reality then the film maker has right to show any real side n if it is included any negative it doesn’t mean he is insulting us.Yes,the director is a british,so some r saying that the brits r feeling relief by showing our negativities.See,if he is busy to get relief, then he might not end the movie happily,he might not show us the hope, the confidence and the fighting attitude of Jamal(an Indian) during various difficulties in the movie. But inspite of that,Indians r not happy about the movie ‘coz of too much negativities about India. Why?Truth hurts ego? Then try to improve the situation instead of petty bickering.Take it as a honest criticism instead of insult. There is nothing extra negative scene has shown in SM,even including poverty.Actually,u people,r not aware of the dangerous life of the slum that has been shown in this movie. There is another raised question- if an Indian made this movie then it would not win Oscar as we r not white.Mira Nair's Saalam Bombay and Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan though could not win oscar but was nominated. If the Westerners have dare to see that and can give recognition by nominating, then why they won’t do the same for SM if it would have been made by an Indian? Finally my personal opinion about the movie is that it's an excellent film,a beautiful fairy tale;but unfortunately it’s doing average in India ‘coz of this kind of people. hi everybody here, i was proud to be an indian when seeing a.r .r, gulzar, resul getting oscar.especially mr.ar rahman the soul of indian music and the legend was getting two oscars really it was my happiest day i can't forget that day in my life.my opinion about the movie slumdogg millionare
positively i can say th+e movie helped the slum children whowere acted in the movie to get rid out from the poverty so its become an useful movie this kind of movies must!!!. get an oscar.
negatively if i say it may be a surprising story for the world not for india. we can think more better than this story i mean in front of the indian cinema history, this story was not that much surprise. any how all the indians were much thankful for mr.danny boyle, who helped our people to show our best efforts to the world.
note:all the directors in india and also all over the world must have to think to make a movie like danny boyle, which is useful for him and others. Posted on Feb 24 2009 18:41 - Report as inappropriate

- i only liked in this film is good blockings there was so many jumps in the story line.after the third Q RELATED TO RAM rest of d QNS are not relevent to the subject climax is horryble. TARE ZAMEEN PAR/IQBAL/LAGAAN/LAGE RAHO MUNNABAI/RANG DE BASANTHI/A WEDNESDAY WAS 10,000 TIMES better film than this ,but still we dont get oscars . i salute to AR for getting the oscar but his job wasnt so great as compare to his earlier films like lagaan/rang de basanthi/roja/bombay according to many in my knowledge ilaya raja is much better musician than AR. AR music it doesnt last forever after some times u dont feel like hearing it ,most of his scores are repititive but raja s scores are ever green .i hope n pray that the time should come for the real n genuine talents to be rewarded Posted on Feb 23 2009 20:21
