Michael Caine is God

Caine will play the man with the beard in a new fantasy feature called 'Sophie's World'.

May  2 2007

In a fitting piece of casting for a true living legend, Michael Caine has signed up to play God in a new fantasy feature based on Jostein Gaarder's bestselling tome 'Sophie's World'.

Focusing on a 14-year-old girl who receives mysterious philosophical messages that lead her on a journey through space and time, the book has already been translated into 54 languages and sold more than 35 million copies worldwide. It was turned into a moderately successful feature by Norweigan helmer Erik Gustavson in 1999.

This time around however, the adaptation will be English-language, with the film shooting entirely in the US once a director and the rest of the cast have been named.

Swedish writer Malle Jensen is currently working on the script, which is being pitched as Alice in Wonderland meets Harry Potter.

It's such a wonderful book. I teach it in high school humanities class and would love to see it made into a real movie instead of the two-dimensional popularization that this promises to be.
The summations of philosophy that are the core of the book will undoubtedly be lost and lots of whiz-bang special time travel effects will substitute for Sophie's journeys of the mind.
Alice, Harry and Sophie are all memorable characters, but much more so in the books than in the movies made of them to date. Posted on May 11 2007 23:05

I liked the book and it has almost nothing to do with Alice in Wonderland and less to do with Harry Potter.
It is about exploring the mind rather than what happened to me on summer break or at boarding school. Posted on May 04 2007 18:01
