Trailer Time
Want to see what Cruise, Depp and Travolta have been up to? Then click on to see three of the biggest trailers of the year.
Dec 10 2004
Trailers seem to be like buses here at Time Out Towers – you wait weeks for a good one and then three come along at once.
War of the Worlds
First up is what will doubtless be one of 2005’s biggest films – 'War of The Worlds'. A fantastic teaser that perfectly whets the appetite for this sci-fi epic, what it lacks in star power (lead Tom Cruise doesn't actually make an appearance in the trailer) it more than makes up for in foreboding atmosphere. And with a plot based on the classic HG Wells novel, a gargantuan budget, Spielberg directing and the prospect of the Cruisester fighting a bunch of Martians throughout, there's no way this one will fail.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Hot on its heels in terms of summer box office is Tim Burton's adaptation of Roald Dahl's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. Yet while the prospect of this eccentric combination is an exciting one, the teaser is a somewhat underwhelming mess of noise and sound, with Johnny Depp looking like he's trying just a little too hard to make his mark on the role of Willy Wonka. But with Burton running the factory and calling the shots, we're prepared to give this one the benefit of the doubt.
Be Cool
For our money though, the best trailer of the day has to be the John Travolta-starring 'Be Cool'. A star-studded sequel to 1995's 'Get Shorty', the film numbers Uma Thurman, Vince Vaughn, Harvey Keitel, The Rock and Danny DeVito amongst its cast, and while it has no martians, oompa-loompas of big-budget set-pieces, the trailer does include a Travolta/Thurman dance scene. Need we say any more?
