'Daybreakers' next for Spierig Brothers

Peter Spierig reveals all regarding he and brother Michael's next project, a horror film that couldn't be more different to 'Undead'.

Jan 11 2005

The Spierig brothers, whose enjoyable Aussie schlock-fest 'Undead' hit cinemas last Friday, have spilled the beans regarding what they are up to next, and it seems that twins Peter and Michael are sticking to what they know best – namely horror.

'Daybreakers' will be the boys next project, and though it won't go before cameras until the end of the year, Peter kindly told us all he could regarding plot:

'Vampires are the dominate species on the planet, and have tried to continue their lives as normal people. Human beings are on the brink of extinction, it's just a matter of time before the entire human population is wiped out. Vampires will suffer an eternity of starvation and madness if they can't find an alternative to human blood. One man discovers a solution that will save the vampire race; they must become human again.'

While he couldn't reveal any casting news at this point, Peter added that while remaining in the horror genre, the film will be quite unlike their debut in terms of tone:

'Daybreakers' is very different to 'Undead'; it's much more serious, darker, scarier and much grander in scope. Michael and I have been working for about a year on the script and still have another six to eight months of development work to do with Lions Gate.'

And as for their reasons for making the film: 'We both love the script and feel like it's the right film to do next,' which sounds like as good a reason as any to us.

So expect 'Daybreakers' sometime in 2006, and if you can't wait until then, check out 'Undead' at a cinema near you now.
