'Tron' to Return
The original computer generated movie is to be re-made for a whole new generation, with a plot revolving around the internet.
Jan 13 2005
'Tron' is all set to return to the big screen after an absence of more than 20 years. Yes, the severely dated, rotoscoped, neon-infested epic that had geeks the world over scratching their collective heads over its 'man in computer' premise is coming back to confuse an entirely new generation of kids.
Disney have approached screenwriters Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal to script a re-make of the 1982 film, which told the tale of a computer programmer who finds himself trapped in a computer program, with no one to turn to but the titular 'Tron'.
Yet while the original, which starred Jeff Bridges, proved to be a landmark in terms of computer graphics, it was hardy a box office smash, with the 'Tron' arcade game proving to be more successful than the film itself.
However, in the intervening years, something of a cult has built up around the movie, culminating in the critically acclaimed 'Tron 2.0' computer game, released in 2003.
The time therefore seems ripe for a re-make, and the two writers have already formulated a plan for the story, having their computer programmer trapped in a cyber world so they can incorporate the internet into proceedings.
'We are contemporising it,' Klugman told Variety, 'Taking these ideas that were ahead of the curve and applying them to the present.'
Sternthal added, 'In a lot of ways, ('Tron') was a movie about a man venturing into hell. Our job will be to keep the humanity as he ventures into an unreal world.'
Sounds a bit heavy compared to the frisby-throwing 'Tron' we remember of old, but rest assured we’ll keep you informed of the project's progress.
