Greenaway to Make Rembrandt Movie

Peter Greenaway is to make a film, entitled 'Nightwatching', about the legendary artist Rembrandt van Rijn.

Feb  9 2005

Peter Greenaway ('The Pillow Book', 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover') is to make a movie about the legendary Dutch painter Rembrandt van Rijn.

The film, called 'Nightwatching', will be written and directed by Greenaway himself and released next year to coincide with the 400th anniversary of the painter’s birth.

It will chronicle the difficult period of Rembrandt's life when he painted one of his most famous and instantly recognisable works, The Nightwatch, and at the same time lost his wife and three children.

Greenaway is planning to release the film at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival.

It is also hoped that the film's premier will be accompanied by a special installation, designed by the director himself, to be displayed next to the actual painting at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The film is being produced by long-time Greenaway collaborator Kees Kassander and will be an English-Dutch-French-German co-production.
