'Kinsey' wins Directors Guild Award
There are also awards for Shane Meadows, Pawel Pawlikowski, Walter Salles and Sam Mendes.
Mar 21 2005
'Kinsey' helmer Bill Condon won the award for outstanding director in the international film category at the Directors Guild of Great Britain ceremony.
Fighting off stiff competition from the likes of Martin Scorsese, Michel Gondry and Oscar-winner Clint Eastwood, Condon won the award at the guild's second annual event, which was held at London's Curzon Mayfair cinema last night (Sunday).
The judges found it more difficult to choose an outstanding British director however, bestowing the award on both Shane Meadows ('Dead Man's Shoes') and Pawel Pawlikowski ('My Summer of Love').
Elsewhere Brazilian director Walter Salles won the foreign language award for 'The Motorcycle Diaries', while Sam Mendes was honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his work in theatre and film.
Accepting the prize from his 'American Beauty' star Kevin Spacey, Mendes said: 'I feel the award is a bank loan, which I'll take out and pay back by the end of 20 years, and by then I'll feel more deserving.'
