'Masters of Horror' announced

Legends like John Caprenter, John Landis, Tobe Hooper and George Romero will all be working on hour-long films for the Showtime Network.

Mar 30 2005

An exciting new horror project will see some of the industry's biggest names work on 13 films for the Showtime Network.

The 'Masters of Horror' series, which is due to start production in Vancouver next month, will feature films by the likes of John Carpenter, Joe Dante, Tobe Hooper, John Landis, George Romero, Roger Corman and Don Coscarelli.

The genre luminaries will each make an hour-long film for the project, which will eventually be released on DVD through Anchor Bay.

Budgets are to range from $1-2 million and the filmmakers will be given complete creative freedom 'to deliver something truly terrifying' as executive producer Andrew Deane puts it.

He continues: 'These are the stories the directors have always wanted to tell, but until now, the right venue has not existed.'

The first six titles in the series have been announced, and they will include John Landis directing 'Deer Woman' from a script that he wrote with his son Max, Stuart Gordon adapting HP Lovecraft's 'Dreams in the Witch House' and John Carpenter directing 'Cigarette Burns' from an original teleplay.

Elsewhere Don Coscarelli will direct Joe Lansdale's 'Incident On and Off a Mountain Road', Mick Garris will make 'Chocolate' (from his own short story) and Dario Argento will direct 'Jennifer', based on the Bruce Jones and Bernie Wrightson comic book.
