The ten-second pitch

Time Out takes a look at the latest films in production.

Apr 22 2005

Harmony Korine ('Gummo', 'Julien Donkey-Boy') will return to filmmaking after five years when he shoots 'Mr Lonely' in Iceland in June. Korine has teamed up with French fashion designer agnès b to form a company, O', Salvation, which will produce the film. Korine was last seen behind the camera filming his friend David Blaine as he starved himself near Tower Bridge.

Bruce Robinson might finally have found a subject to outdo his debauched debut. The 'Withnail & I' director is lined up to shoot 'The Rum Diary', adapted from the late Hunter S Thompson's early work. The long-gestating project reunites 'Fear and Loathing' stars Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro (who was originally slated to direct), along with Nick Nolte and Josh Hartnett.

Photographer Rankin will shoot his first feature film in May, only three months after putting out a call for scripts. The £500,000 project is sponsored by Italian jeans company Meltin Pot and produced by Dazed Film & TV, the production wing of Dazed & Confused magazine. The chosen script is by Tony Grisoni ('Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', 'In This World').

Emir Kustirica moves from 'Life Is A Miracle' to the hand of God: the Sarajevan director is working on a documentary about Diego Maradona. Shooting is planned for Argentina, Spain, Italy and Cuba, where Kusturica wants to interview Fidel Castro.

'The Hitcher' is the latest horror favourite to get the make-over treatment, thanks to Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes production company. There's no script yet, but the famously modest Bay promises 'a rocking film'.
