George Lucas to receive special Cannes honour

The 'Star Wars' creator will receive the prestigious Festival Trophy for his contribution to cinema.

May  6 2005

Not only is 'Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith' receiving its official premiere at this year's Cannes Film Festival, but George Lucas will also receive a very special honour at the event.

The writer/director is to be awarded the Festival Trophy in celebration of both his career and his contribution to cinema.

It will make Lucas only the 10th person to receive the award in the Cannes history, with past recipients including Ken Loach, Sean Penn, Gregory Peck, Jeanne Moreau and Max von Sydow.

Speaking of Cannes, don't forget that Time Out's extensive coverage of the festival kicks off next week.

Dave Calhoun and Geoff Andrew will be sending back daily reports from the South of France, featuring news, reviews and interviews with all the biggest stars, as well as vague recollections of all the best parties.

And with Lars von Trier's 'Manderlay', Jim Jarmusch's 'Broken Flowers', Wim Wenders' 'Don't Come a Knockin' and David Cronenberg's 'A History of Violence' among the countless intriguing films in competition, it promises to be one of the most interesting Cannes festivals in years.
