'The History Boys' to hit the big screen
Nicholas Hytner will direct the film version, while Bennett will adapt his own script for the screen.
Jun 10 2005
Alan Bennett's critically acclaimed West End hit 'The History Boys' is to be made into a feature film.
The hugely successful show, which premiered at the National Theatre last year, won three Olivier Awards as well as the Evening Standard and Critics' Circle prizes for best play during its run.
Much like 1994's 'The Madness of King George', the film version will be adapted by Bennett and directed by Nicholas Hytner, while most of the cast are expected to reprise their stage roles on screen.
In the words of the National, 'The History Boys' concerns: 'An unruly bunch of bright, funny sixth-formers in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university. A maverick teacher at odds with the young and shrewd supply teacher. A headmaster obsessed with results and a history teacher who thinks he’s a fool.'
A play about staffroom rivalry, the anarchy of adolescence and the purpose of education, production is expected to begin in the UK in July, with DNA Films and the BBC financing and Fox Searchlight distributing.

- I saw the film and as is nearly always the case with Alan Bennett's brilliant writing there is a subversive message, in fact there's more than one, but I won't spoil it for those who haven't seen it by revelaing what they may be, you must however see it! It is truly excellent. There is one possible minor error I spotted....I believe the film is set in 1983 in that case to include a scene in which the Racing Post is clearly seen would be incorrect....the RP was first published in 1985. Someone (could be me) not knowing their history? ;-) Posted on Oct 09 2006 18:07
