'Mr & Mrs Smith' knock 'Sin' and 'Sith' for six
The Doug Liman directed action pic opens big, but Bollywood romance also fares well.
Jun 15 2005
The star-power of 'Mr and Mrs Smith' (plus a few tabloid headlines) was enough to knock the residents of 'Sin City' off the top of the London box office chart this weekend.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's action-packed antics as a pair of married assassins grossed a whopping £320,786 at the box office, easily claiming the top spot from Robert Rodriguez's comic book blood-fest.
The citizens of 'Sin' continued to lord it over the 'Sith', however, taking a very respectable £141,905 compared to the £104,782 gross of 'Episode III'.
Two former Time Out films of the week also did good business, with 'The Consequences of Love' continuing its impressive run at number four and 'Kings and Queen' making a very respectable debut a number six.
Bollywood romance 'Parineeta' also made an impressive start, raking in £12,480 at number nine, is spite of the fact that it is playing on just three screens.
Elsewhere, 'The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse' fell to five after just one week, suggesting that their brand of black comedy may be a little too dark for mainstream audiences, while 'The Pacifier' and 'Monster-in-Law' continue to hang around the lower reaches of the chart like a bad smell.
Expect it to be all-change at the top next week though, as Christopher Nolan's brilliant 'Batman Begins', for our money the best blockbuster of the summer thus far, hits cinemas on Thursday.
