Philip Noyce to make 'Hot Stuff'

Biopic will tell the tale of African freedom fighter Patrick Chamusso.

Jul 11 2005

Philip Noyce is to make a film about African National Congress freedom fighter Patrick Chamusso entitled 'Hot Stuff'.

'The Quiet American' helmer has spent the last few months working on the project with screenwriter Shawn Slovo, whose late father was a friend of Chamusso.

Her script follows his career as a saboteur in the ANC's military arm, where he became famous for legendary solo attacks on the apartheid regime.

Chamusso was caught and sentenced to 24 years on Robben Island.

He was eventually released in 1991, and has since spoken with Noyce about the project.

Derek Luke ('Antwone Fisher') will play the lead role, while Bonnie Mbuli ('Drum') has been cast as his wife and Tim Robbins is in negotiations to play an apartheid government policeman.

Filming kicks off in Secunda (where Chamusso lived and worked) in August before moving to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Mozambique and Swaziland.
