Terry Gilliam's 'Tideland' premieres at Toronto

The director's new film is among a slew of exciting titles screening at the Canadian festival.

Terry Gilliam's 'Tideland' will receive its world premiere at the 30th Toronto International Film Festival, it was announced this week.

The fantasy-drama, which stars Jeff Bridges, Jennifer Tilly and Jodelle Ferland, tells the tale of a nine-year-old girl retreating into a fantasy world to escape the horrors of her unhappy upbringing.

The film is one a slew of titles that have been announced for this year's festival. Other highlights include:

'Little Fish' – International premiere of the award-winning Australian drama about a recovering heroin addict (Cate Blanchett) trying to make sense of her life.

'Proof' – John Madden adapts David Auburn's critically acclaimed play, with a cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Jake Gyllenhaal and Anthony Hopkins.

'L'Enfer' – Krzysztof Piesiewicz writes and Danis Tanovic directs this drama about three sisters traumatised by an act of violence that took place during their childhood. Emmanuelle Béart, Karin Viarid and Marie Gillain star.

'Pride and Prejudice' – Keira Knightley, Donald Sutherland and Brenda Blethyn star in an adaptation of the Jane Austen novel.

'Brothers of the Head' – Mockumentary from Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe ('Lost in La Mancha') about a pair of conjoined twins groomed by a music promoter to provide a link between rock and punk.

'In Her Shoes' – Curtis Hanson directs Cameron Diaz and Toni Collette in this tale of two very different sisters whose only similarity is their shoe size.

'Harsh Times' – 'Training Day' writer David Ayer's directorial debut about a pair of unemployed friends who run into trouble on the streets of South Central LA. Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez star.

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 8-17, and Time Out will be reporting direct from the festival.
