Charlie Chan returns

Lucy Liu is all set to play the legendary detective's granddaughter in an update of the franchise.

Charlie Chan is returning to cinemas after an absence of more than 25 years.

The legendary Chinese-American detective, who was last seen on the big screen in Clive Donner's hokey 'Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen' (click here for a review of that particular mess), will return in the shapely form of Lucy Liu sometime next year.

The philosophy-spouting crime-fighter won't be undergoing gender reassignment in the franchise update however.

Instead, the 'Charlie's Angels' star will play the detective's beautiful granddaughter, who also happens to be a skilled sleuth herself.

Little else is known about the project at this time, although Dan McDermott, who is currently busy beavering away on the script, called it 'A reinvention of the franchise that credibly passes on the baton to Lucy Liu as the lead character and lead of the franchise'.
