'Tsotsi' wins in Toronto

The British-South African co-production is the audience favourite at the Canadian festival.

Sep 19 2005

Having taken home the audience award at Edinburgh this year, Gavin Hood's 'Tsotsi' achieved the same feat in Toronto over the weekend, walking away with the People's Choice Award at the city's international film festival.

The British-South African co-production was the unanimous choice of the festival audience; beating the likes of Radu Mihaileanu's 'Live and Become' (which came second) and John Gatins' 'Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story' (voted into third place).

Elsewhere, Sarah Watt's Australian comedy-drama 'Look Both Ways' won the Discovery Award, while The Fipresci Prize for emerging filmmakers went to Kang Yi-kwan for his bittersweet love story 'Sak-wa'.

And in the Canadian category, 'Jean-Marc Vallee's 'C.R.A.Z.Y' was named best feature film, while Louise Archambault's 'Familia' and Michael Mabbott's 'The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico' tied for best first feature.

The festival, which is now in its 30th year, screened 335 films from 52 countries over the course of its ten days, including 109 world premieres.

A full report will appear on the site tomorrow.
