Lee to take on Katrina
Spike teams up with HBO to make controversial Katrina documentary
Oct 13 2005
Spike Lee is to join forces with HBO to produce and direct a documentary about the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
Tentatively titled 'When the Levees Broke' it is expected to continue Lee's history of polemic filmmaking tackling African-American issues and in this case the US government's perceived failure to assist the black community.
Although the film is waiting to go into production while the New York director finishes mystery-thriller 'Inside Man', rumours circulating the net suggest that Lee covertly entered the city with a camera crew to collect footage at some stage following the disaster.
Whether these prove to be true or not, the director will have a plethora of media coverage to work his way through to present his perspective on the tragedy.
Having already made a small handful of documentaries such as 1997's '4 Little Girls' this should prove to be Lee's biggest yet.
'Inside Man' which stars Denzel Washington, Clive Owen and Jodie Foster is due for release early 2006.
