Staunton joins Swank in 'Freedom Writers'

Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton will star opposite Oscar winner Hilary Swank in the high school drama.

Nov 16 2005

Imelda Staunton is to join Hilary Swank in the American high school drama 'Freedom Writers'.

This film will be Staunton's first big Hollywood project following her Oscar nomination for best actress in Mike Leigh's 'Vera Drake'.

'Freedom Writers' is based on the true story of a maverick English teacher (Swank) who inspired a group of 'problem kids' from a Californian ghetto to improve their lives both in and out of school.

Staunton will play a fellow teacher, with Scott Glenn ('The Silence of the Lambs') cast as Swank's father and R&B singer Mario playing one of the students.

Filming starts next month in Los Angeles under the direction of Richard LaGravenese ('Living Out Loud').
