Anna Smith's films of the year

Time Out critic Anna Smith reveals her favourite five films of the year.

Dec 22 2005

'The Sea Inside'
A beautifully-judged drama laced with black humour - for once the Academy got it right when they awarded this the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year.

'Pride & Prejudice'
This drew out the delights of Austen's novel with such exuberance it gave an old story new life - even if Macfayden was the wrong man for the job of Darcy.

'Mysterious Skin'
One of the most absorbing films of the year, this worked disturbing themes into a thoroughly entertaining feature - no small thanks to a mesmerising performance from Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

'The Edukators'
Hot on the heels of 'Good Bye, Lenin!' came this smart crime comedy drama that continued to prove Germany's ability to explore political issues within an accessible, entertaining format.

'Me and You and Everyone We Know'
There were pleasing echoes of 'Happiness' in Miranda July's edgy first feature that tackled suburban sexuality with an eye for both humour and poignancy.
