'Brokeback Mountain' continues to tower over box office competition
Funnymen Jim Carrey and Steve Coogan are no match for Ang Lee's cowboy epic at London cinemas.
Jan 24 2006
Golden Globe-winning western 'Brokeback Mountain' spent a third week at the top of the London charts, easily seeing off challenges from the likes of Jim Carrey, Steve Coogan and 50 Cent.
Ang Lee's critically acclaimed western grossed £182,037 from 19 screens, and with both the Oscar nominations and the BAFTAs soon to be announced, the film is likely to loiter around the top for a while longer yet.
The highest new entry was 'Fun with Dick and Jane' which went straight in at number three (some £80,000 behind 'Memoirs of a Geisha' at number two). However, we doubt that Jim Carrey's star power will be able to stop this lacklustre remake of the none-too-memorable 1976 original from sinking without a trace in the near future.
Time Out favourite 'A Cock and Bull Story' was a new entry at number six, a disappointing debut for what is one of the funniest flicks we've seen in years (and if you don't believe us, check out stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon discussing the film here).
Hot on its heels was the forgettable sci-fi sequel 'Underworld: Evolution' at seven, while the only other new entry was rap drama 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' which went straight in with a bullet (or nine of them knowing star 'Fiddy' Cent) at number ten.
Next week, expect the well-received 'Hidden', 'Munich' and 'The New World' to all do well in the big smoke.
