Equalizer No.1
Help cast Paul 'Gangster No.1' McGuigan's film version of 'The Equaliser'.

I recently caught up with director Paul McGuigan to discuss his new film, 'Lucky Number Slevin', and while that feature will go up next week, I've got a titbit of news I can announce today.
McGuigan, who helmed the brilliant 'Gangster No.1' as well as 'The Acid House' and 'Wicker Park', has just been signed up to direct the forthcoming film version of TV series 'The Equalizer'.
When The TOMB first covered this project a couple of months ago (click here for that story), debate was rife in the office as to who should play the title role, with everyone from Christopher Eccleston to Ray Winstone to Jeremy Irons being suggested.
And having yet to cast the role himself, McGuigan said he was intrigued to hear who Time Out readers think should step into Edward Woodward's shoes.

- I watched every episode of "The Equalizer" in the 80's and thoroughly enjoyed seeing someome fighting for people who could not fight-(ie Stingray)I really wish Edward Woodward could reprise HIS role cause he did it style,professionalism and actually pure charisma.As far as British/Scottish/Welsh and Irish actors I feel that age should not necessarily be a factor(u can't replave Mr Woodward).So i would say Ciaran Hinds might be okay but Jason Statham might be better.He does have style and charisma and the Jag would be perfect for his transportation.If nationality is not a factor?? I might even step over the line and say Tom Selleck cause he was an ex Navy Intelligence Officer turned P.I.he did help people -He has Style-Professionalim-and Charisma.This is a hard decision in order to uphold Mr Woodward's role the way it should be.It could be anybody's guess.We'll just hope for the best. Patrick Stewart definitely has the gravitas / presence.
Whoever it is I think its important they are English, 50-60 years old and not your typical looking cartoon spy (ie Woodward was perfect in this role). Posted on Nov 26 2007 05:40 - Report as inappropriate

I normally don't go for remakes, but in this case - get on with it! (The ensuing merchandising marathon should finally ensure the release of the DVDs of the series).
As for who plays him, well I think Patrick Stewart is the only actor of the right age and requisite gravitas to be able to pull it off. Posted on Sep 06 2006 14:19 - Report as inappropriate
