Hathaway 'Becoming' Jane Austen

'Brokeback Mountain' star Anne Hathaway will play the novelist in a forthcoming biopic.

Mar  1 2006

Jane Austen films have translated into box office gold over the last few years, with 'Pride & Prejudice', 'Bride and Prejudice', 'Emma' and 'Sense and Sensibility' all doing big business on both sides of the Atlantic.

And that run of form looks set to continue, with Anne Hathaway ('The Princess Diaries', 'Brokeback Mountain') playing the novelist in forthcoming biopic 'Becoming Jane'.

The film will revolve around Austen's love affair with Irish rogue Tom Lefroy, and the way in which he inspired the male characters of 'Pride and Prejudice'.

James McAvoy, Maggie Smith and Julie Walters will also star, while Julian Jarrold ('Kinky Boots') will direct.

Acutally, in response to the above comment, I'm an obssessed Jane Austen fan and I don't feel bad about Anne Hathaway playing a beloved authoress. In fact, I'm thrilled. I think Anne (in resemblance to Jane) has the whole doe-eyed thing going on, and JA's coloring. She's a decent actress, and frankly, it could be worse, but 'm happy with the descion. Bloody hell thats awfull that Anne is playing Jane for one she is not even British. You would think that the most beloved female Englsih writer would at least be played by an English woman. This is terrible for Austen fans. Posted on Mar 16 2006 05:17
