'Crouching Tiger' heading for the stage
The Weinsteins are planning a stage version of the film, plus a series of prequels and sequels for the screen.
Mar 10 2006
Good news for martial arts fans - Bob and Harvey Weinstein have announced plans to bring the critically acclaimed epic 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' to the stage.
In this morning's announcement, Harvey Weinstein said that they aim to combine 'Cirque du Soleil with a pronounced narrative, featuring the greatest martial artists.'
The brothers have also acquired the worldwide rights to Wang Du Lu's five-book 'Crane – Iron Pentalogy' (of which ‘Crouching Tiger’ was the fourth) and plan to turn them into a film franchise.
'('Crouching Tiger') was one of the most successful foreign-language films of all time, and there is a whole world of material in all of these books that can be explored in a series of great films, much like the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy,’ explained Harvey. 'Theater audiences should have high expectations for the spectacle that this extraordinary material can bring to the stage, and I think this is an opportunity to create something revolutionary.'
Could be brilliant, could be terrible - I guess we'll just have to wait and see...
