’Johnny Depp kissed my daughter‘
Timothy Spall has spoken exclusively to Time Out about his upcoming role in Tim Burton's ’Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’, in which Johnny Depp plays the legendary murderous hairdresser of Victorian London.
Spall plays Beadle Bamford, the wily associate of Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who wrongly sends a younger Sweeney to jail, so fueling his later desire for bloody revenge.
‘I have a little singing number in Sweeney Todd ,’ says Spall. ‘It‘s all about advising my boss, played by Alan Rickman, on how to seduce a young woman. It is disgusting.’
Spall has high hopes for the big-budget film, which will be released on January 25th. It's Burton's first film since both ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Corpse Bride’ in 2005.
‘What better then a Victorian Opera about a serial killer directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp!’
‘Johnny was fantastic. I took my youngest daughter, who is 22, in on my last day of filming. He is a God to her, and he was so sweet to her. He chatted and kissed her good bye. He is so lovely and a bloody brilliant actor. He was delightful, as was Helena Bonham Carter. It was a fantastic experience.’
Spall also appears this month in ‘Enchanted’ – a new Disney film about an innocent cartoon character who finds herself having to survive in a very real, modern-day New York.
