Almodóvar offers 'Broken Hugs'
Pedro Almodóvar has announced that his new film is to be called 'Broken Hugs', and is to star Penelope Cruz
No, it’s not a bizarre mistranslation, that wonderful Spaniard Pedro Almodóvar (director of last year’s splendid ‘Volver’) has announced that his new film is to be called ‘Broken Hugs’ and it will reunite him with his leading lady du jour Penelope Cruz.Previously, Almodóvar had started that his next film would be called ‘El Piel Qui Habito’ and would involve Cruz as a plastic surgeon who took revenge on her many patients. However, it looks like the director has had a last minute change of heart and has decided, apparently, to produce a darker work than he had originally intended.
Famously secretive about plot and character details, Almodóvar said that he intends to delve into some Cruz’s little-known facets as an actor and that this new film won’t be a comedy but will contain humour.
He also said that this script for ‘Broken Hugs’ was the longest he had ever written: could this be the sweeping Almodóvar epic that we’ve all been waiting for? Here’s hoping.
