The BBFC warning for Michael Haneke’s shot-for-shot English language remake of his bile-filled bourgeois horror film ‘Funny Games’ says that it, ‘contains strong sustained threat, humiliation and violence’. It should really read, ‘analyses and dissects the nature of strong sustained threat, humiliation and violence, then has a go at you for enjoying it’.

Made with the intention of reaching US audiences (a feat which the German-language original singularly failed to achieve), it hasn’t really has US critics salivating with praise (in fact, quite the opposite), but it remains as intriguing and terrifying a cine-essay as it was back in 1997, and has been the stimulus for some great journalism to boot.

Many have accused Haneke of lecturing the audience with his film, denouncing the internal reflex in most thrill-seeking cinemagoers to watch and relish on-screen violence without ever really showing it (boy do we hear it, though).
